Challenge: How can the elderly live at home for as long as possible?

hands-walking-stick-elderly-old-personA societal goal is to support the possibilities of elderly people to live at home or in new home-like environments for as long as possible. About half of the elderly live alone at home, therefore, the security of the residential area is an issue that requires new solutions. There are also people living at home that suffer from memory disorders, whose home security could benefit from technology.

How can we enable contact between the elderly and their family?

Children often live in different localities, which constitutes remote guardianship. This requires different tools to ensure communication, information flow and security.

How do we support caregivers’ welfare in their care and help activities?

If a spouse is alive, they often function as a caregiver with or without caregiver support. Subsequently, an elderly spouse helps and cares for their elderly spouse. How could a caregiver be supported with technology? A caregiver needs support with their own welfare. On the other hand, a caregiver also needs support in their care and help activities.

How do we support volunteers working with the elderly?

As the amount of the elderly increases, public services are not sufficient to cover all service needs. Already now, volunteer work to help with the elderly is in an important role, and tools are needed to support volunteers as well as to facilitate activities with technology. How, for instance, can we enable the needy and the volunteer to meet safely and easily? Can volunteer work be done online? Does technology offer tools to help elderly friends help each other?
